Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the cervical abnormality.

The antibiotics most commonly given include the following:

• Ceftriaxone (if gonorrhea is suspected)

• Azithromycin (if chlamydia is suspected)

• Cephalexin and ciprofloxacin (commonly given for bacterial infections of the lower urinary tract)

• Nitrofurantoin (commonly used in pregnant women)

CLINICAL TIP

Cases of lower urinary tract and genital infection in pregnancy should be referred to an OB/GYN.
